Cappadocian Drachm

One of the most striking features of the Cappadocian Drachm is its obverse portrait, often depicting a king like Ariarathes with such fine detail that the curls in his beard seem etched by a jeweler's hand, reflecting the blend of Persian and Greek artistry in a frontier kingdom.

These silver coins, typically weighing around 4 grams, were minted in cities such as Eusebeia or Tyana between roughly 331 BC and 17 AD, during the Hellenistic era when Cappadocia navigated alliances with Seleucids and Romans. The reverse might show Athena or a horse, symbols borrowed from wider Greek traditions but adapted to local tastes. Mintage figures are murky; records from that period were scarce and likely destroyed in later conflicts.

Not every drachm followed the same design—variations in die work suggest multiple workshops, possibly improvising with available silver. If you're handling one, note the subtle edge irregularities, a sign of hand-struck production rather than modern precision. Some experts debate the exact alloys, as analyses vary.

Provenance can be tricky; many surface in digs around Turkey, but fakes abound, so verify with a loupe.
