Alexander the Great Tetradrachm

The tetradrachm of Alexander the Great often featured the head of Herakles wearing a lion's skin, a design that subtly echoed the king's own features and his boasts of divine descent.

This silver coin, struck in Macedonian mints like Amphipolis or Pella, showed Zeus seated on the reverse, holding an eagle and scepter. The imagery reinforced Alexander's imperial propaganda, linking him to the gods even as his armies conquered vast territories. Weighing around 17 grams, these tetradrachms circulated from the Hindu Kush to the Nile, a testament to their role in financing his campaigns.

Exact mintage figures are lost to time; ancient records burned in library fires or faded with the empires they served. That said, varieties exist with slight die differences, prized for their artistry despite the wear from centuries of use.

Some numismatists quibble over whether the Herakles portrait is flattery or fiction.
