Greek 1988 20 Drachmai

The 1988 Greek 20 drachmai coin was the first bimetallic denomination in modern Greek currency, featuring a brass outer ring bonded to a cupronickel center to deter counterfeiting.

That design choice reflected Greece's push toward more secure circulation coins in the late 20th century, especially as inflation eroded the value of smaller denominations. The obverse shows a phoenix rising, symbolizing rebirth, while the reverse depicts the Greek coat of arms.

Mintage figures for this year are murky; official records from the Athens mint weren't always reliable. If you're hunting one, expect wear from daily use—most saw pocket change duty until the euro arrived.

Plenty of myths circulate about these coins being rare, but that's nonsense; they were produced in bulk.
