The 1956 Soviet 2 kopeks coin was one of the first to feature a simplified state emblem, stripped of some Stalinist flourishes as part of Khrushchev's broader de-Stalinization push.

Struck at the Leningrad Mint, it used an aluminum-bronze alloy, a practical choice amid post-war material shortages that kept production cheap and efficient. The obverse showed the Soviet coat of arms with its hammer and sickle, while the reverse simply stated the denomination. Weighing about 1.6 grams, these coins circulated widely in everyday transactions, from bread to bus fares.

We don't know the exact mintage figures; records from that era are spotty, likely due to bureaucratic upheavals. What I can say is that, like most Khrushchev-era coins, it wasn't designed for collectors but for utility in a recovering economy.
