1 Krona 1952 Commemorative

This 1952 Swedish 1 Krona commemorative was struck shortly after Gustav VI Adolf's accession, featuring his portrait on the obverse for the first time in a circulating denomination.

That design choice broke from tradition, opting for a simpler profile over the elaborate crowns and shields of earlier issues. The reverse shows the Swedish coat of arms, rendered with clean lines that reflected postwar austerity. Minted in copper-nickel, it circulated alongside regular currency, which was unusual for commemoratives at the time.

Records on exact mintage are spotty; the Swedish mint's archives from that era aren't as detailed as we'd like. Some collectors chase it for the historical tie, but it's no rarer than many from the period.

Plenty of these turn up in estate lots, still shiny after seven decades.
