50 Öre 1938 Sweden

This 50 öre coin was struck in 1938 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, a rare instance where Sweden's mint honored an institution rather than a monarch.

The obverse shows a portrait of King Gustaf V, while the reverse features Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom, encircled by the academy's name. It's composed of copper-nickel, a material choice that reflected Sweden's move toward more durable alloys in the interwar period. Mintage figures are unclear; records from that era were spotty.

Design-wise, Erik Lindberg engraved the piece, bringing a classical touch to what was otherwise a functional denomination. Not every coin gets to play muse to science.

Don't bother hunting for one in pristine condition. They turn up often enough in circulation finds.
