The Celtiberian As prominently features the Iberian script, one of the earliest instances of a written language appearing on coinage in Western Europe.

This made it more than mere metal; it was a statement of cultural identity in a region rife with influences from Carthage and Rome. Struck from bronze, probably in the 3rd or 2nd century BC, the exact origins remain murky—records from that era are as scarce as honest politicians.
