Umayyad Gold Dinar

The Umayyad Gold Dinar from Egypt was among the first coins to feature only Arabic inscriptions, a deliberate shift from the image-heavy Byzantine solidi it replaced.

Struck in pure gold, typically weighing around 4.25 grams, these dinars were minted in Egyptian workshops using metal sourced from conquered territories. The obverse often bore the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, while the reverse listed the mint and date in the Hijri calendar. Egypt's Fustat served as a key production center, churning out coins that facilitated trade across the expanding caliphate.

We don't know the exact mintage figures; records from that era are scarce and often incomplete. What survives shows variations in die quality, with some strikes appearing crude due to rushed production.

The designs evolved over the dynasty's rule, from simple scripts to more refined calligraphy, reflecting changing political priorities. A dry note: Inscriptions like "There is no god but God" made these coins read like portable sermons—functional, if not exactly riveting bedtime stories.
