Swiss 1991 Environment Coin

The 1991 Swiss environment coin was one of the first to embed an ecological theme directly into its design, featuring a globe encircled by the Swiss cross and alpine motifs to symbolize national conservation efforts.

This 5-franc piece, struck in silver, came from the Bern mint and weighed about 15 grams with a diameter of 31 millimeters. Mintage figures are uncertain; official records from that era are spotty, possibly due to archival shifts in the 1990s. What we know is that it was intended for circulation but quickly became a collector's item among those interested in thematic issues.

The obverse shows the standard Swiss coat of arms, while the reverse's environmental imagery was the work of engraver Hans Erni, who drew on Switzerland's landscapes. It's a straightforward piece, no hidden treasures.
