De la Madrid Peso

The De la Madrid Peso, minted between 1982 and 1988, was struck in cupro-nickel alloy, a material choice that reflected Mexico's efforts to stabilize production costs amid global metal price fluctuations.

Its design was straightforward: the obverse showed the Mexican coat of arms, an eagle perched on a cactus, while the reverse simply stated the denomination. No frills here, just the basics for a coin meant for daily use. I've turned over thousands of these in my career, and they're as unpretentious as they come.

Mintage figures vary by year, but records from the Casa de Moneda de México are spotty for that period, possibly due to administrative changes. What we do know is that these pesos circulated heavily, often showing wear after just a few months in pockets.

Not every coin needs a legend. These just did their job.
