1964 Irish Threepence

The 1964 Irish threepence was one of the final coins minted in Ireland's pre-decimal era, quietly marking the end of a system that had persisted since the country's independence.

Weighing in at just over two grams, this bronze piece featured the Irish harp on the obverse, a symbol borrowed from ancient traditions, and a sprig of shamrock on the reverse—a nod to national identity without the usual embellishments. It was struck at the Royal Mint in London, as Ireland lacked its own facilities at the time.

Exact mintage figures are murky; records from that period aren't always reliable. What we do know is that these coins circulated widely but wore down quickly due to their composition.
