1961 South Africa 20 Cents

Despite its unassuming size, the 1961 20-cent coin from South Africa was struck from 0.500 fine silver, a composition that reflected the nation's transition from the pound to the decimal Rand system amid global economic shifts.

This meant it contained exactly half silver by weight, a practical choice for a country still building its post-colonial identity. The obverse featured the South African coat of arms, while the reverse showed a springbok, both designs standard for the era. Mintage figures for that year are imprecise; records from the South African Mint weren't always meticulous in the early 1960s.

Weighing 13.74 grams and measuring 30 millimeters in diameter, these coins circulated widely until 1990. They were produced at the Pretoria Mint, though exact production numbers remain murky due to incomplete archives.
