The 1958 Soviet 10 kopeks coin was one of the first in its series to use aluminum bronze, a material choice driven by the need to stretch resources during the post-war economic squeeze.

This coin, struck at the Leningrad Mint, features the Soviet state emblem on the obverse—a hammer and sickle encircled by sheaves of wheat—and the denomination on the reverse. At about 17.5 millimeters in diameter, it was designed for everyday transactions in a vast empire. Weighing roughly 1.3 grams, the alloy gave it a distinctive golden hue that wore quickly in circulation.

Records on exact mintage figures are murky; archives from that era weren't always reliable. What we do know is that millions entered circulation, from Moscow to Vladivostok, before being phased out in later reforms.

One oddity: despite its ubiquity, this coin rarely shows up in pristine condition, as if it preferred the grit of real life over a collector's shelf.
