1954 Irish Penny

The 1954 Irish Penny features a design by Percy Metcalfe that depicts a hen with twelve chicks, a subtle reference to the twelve pence in a shilling—proof that numismatists appreciate a good mathematical Easter egg.

Struck in bronze at the Royal Mint in London, it reflects Ireland's reliance on British minting facilities until the late 1960s. The obverse shows the Irish harp, a motif unchanged since the 1920s.
