South Vietnam 5 Dong

The South Vietnamese 5 Dong coin, struck in aluminum at the Paris Mint, was one of the few denominations that remained in circulation throughout the turbulent 1950s and 1970s, despite frequent disruptions in supply chains.

That lightweight composition made sense for a country on edge; aluminum was cheap and abundant, especially when heavier metals were hard to come by. The obverse typically bore the national emblem, a simple design that echoed the republic's aspirations for stability. We don't know the exact mintage figures, as records from that era are spotty, but estimates suggest millions were produced to handle everyday transactions in a war economy.

On the reverse, you'll find the denomination and year, struck with the kind of precision that French minting techniques demanded. I've seen plenty of these in collections, their edges worn from actual use rather than careful storage.

Plenty of myths circulate about these coins being rare war relics, but most were just pocket change.
