1 Piastre (Laos)

The 1 Piastre coin from Laos, struck between 1952 and 1954, was minted in silver at the Paris Mint, a choice that reflected France's lingering economic control even as independence loomed.

This made it part of a series that circulated in French Indochina, including Laos, during a turbulent period of decolonization. The obverse typically bore the image of Marianne, symbolizing the French Republic, while the reverse featured Laotian motifs like the temple of Vat Phou. Such designs highlighted the uneasy blend of colonial authority and local identity.

Exact mintage figures are murky; records from that era were often incomplete or destroyed in later conflicts. Still, surviving examples show fine detail, thanks to the high-quality dies used.
