Juliana 1948 Commemorative

The 1948 Juliana commemorative gold coin was struck using bullion that had been safeguarded during the Nazi occupation, a practical reuse of resources in postwar Europe.

That decision made it a symbol of resilience, though I've seen plenty of coins hailed as such over the years. The obverse features a portrait of Juliana, designed by the Dutch engraver Nico van Suchtelen, showing her in a simple style that avoided the pomp of earlier monarchs. On the reverse, the Dutch coat of arms appears, encircled by the inscription for her accession.

Mintage figures are murky; records from that era were spotty due to the upheaval. What I can say is that it's a 10-ducat piece, composed of 90% gold, and it weighs about 6.8 grams.

Some collectors fixate on its edge lettering, which includes the year and a motto, as if it holds secrets. It doesn't.
