1948 Mexico 5 Centavos

The 1948 5 Centavos from Mexico was struck using bronze alloys that included recycled materials, a practical response to the global metal shortages lingering after World War II.

That makes it a modest survivor of economic necessity, not some heroic artifact. The obverse shows the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a serpent—simple and unchanged from earlier designs. The reverse lists the denomination and date, with no frills.

We don't know the exact mintage figures; records from that era at the Mexico City mint are spotty. What we do have is a coin that circulated widely, handling everyday transactions without much fanfare.

Plenty of these turn up in collections, often in decent condition, which is more than you can say for coins that saw real adventure.
