Franco 5 Centimos

Bearing the yoke and arrows of the Falange on its reverse, the 5 Centimos coin from 1947 to 1953 symbolized Franco's regime in the smallest of currencies.

Struck in bronze at the Madrid mint, it measured about 15 millimeters across and weighed roughly a gram, making it unassuming yet essential for postwar transactions. Production spanned seven years, with variations in die quality that sometimes led to weak strikes. We don't have exact mintage records for every year, as some archives were lost in later fires, but estimates suggest millions were issued to stabilize the economy.

Design-wise, the obverse featured the Spanish coat of arms, a nod to national identity amid isolation. It's a coin that collectors might dismiss, but handling one brings back the grit of that era.
