The Netherlands Antilles gulden's 1941 introduction marked it as one of the first currencies issued for a Dutch Caribbean territory during World War II, reflecting the islands' shift under direct Dutch control amid global turmoil.

That initial series included silver coins, which were scarce due to wartime metal shortages, leading to rapid design adaptations. Later issues, spanning decades, featured motifs like the coat of arms or local flora, all minted in Utrecht despite the Caribbean setting. Mintage figures vary; some years' records are incomplete, possibly lost in archival moves.

One peculiarity: the gulden's exchange rate was fixed to the U.S. dollar, a practical nod to neighboring economies. This made it straightforward for tourists, though it didn't stop the occasional mix-up in pockets.

Variations exist, such as the 1970 1-gulden coin with its distinctive ridged edge, but exact survival rates remain unclear without comprehensive catalogs. By 2010, as the Antilles dissolved, these coins faded into obscurity.
