In 1937, Spain's Second Republic issued this 25 Pesetas coin to mark its participation in the Paris International Exhibition, even as civil war raged across the country. That act of defiance turned a simple silver piece into a snapshot of a nation clinging to diplomacy.

The coin measures 34 millimeters in diameter and contains about 15 grams of 0.835 fine silver. It bears a portrait of a woman representing the Republic on one side, with the exhibition's emblem on the other. Production occurred at the Madrid mint, though exact numbers are murky—some archives burned during the conflict.

Not all coins survived intact; many circulated amid the chaos, showing wear that tells its own story. As for the 1938 version, it followed a similar design but with minor tweaks, possibly reflecting updated allegiances.

Some collectors note the irony in a government minting commemoratives while fighting for survival.
