Austrian 1 Schilling

The 1934 Austrian 1 Schilling was struck during the Austrofascist regime's clampdown on political dissent, featuring a federal eagle on its reverse that awkwardly symbolized national unity.

This aluminum-bronze coin entered circulation under Engelbert Dollfuss's authoritarian rule, which suppressed left-wing movements and aligned Austria closer to fascist Italy. Mintage figures for that year remain unclear, as records from the Vienna mint were disrupted by the era's upheavals. The obverse shows a simple portrait of the Republic's arms, a design holdover from earlier issues, while the edge bears a reeded pattern for anti-counterfeiting.

Though it circulated until Austria's annexation in 1938, examples in high grades are scarce today, owing to wartime wear. As for myths, I've heard tales of hidden messages in the eagle's feathers—nonsense, of course; it's just a bird.
