Union Half Crown

The Union Half Crown's 1923 issue was the first coin struck for the newly formed Union of South Africa, unifying the currencies of the former colonies into a single standard. That makes it a tangible marker of political consolidation, right down to the metal.

It was minted in Pretoria from 1923 to 1960, initially in .500 fine silver until 1951, then switched to cupro-nickel as silver prices rose. The obverse bore the portrait of the reigning British monarch, while the reverse featured the South African coat of arms with its shield and supporters.
