10 Centavos Peru

The 10 Centavos coin from Peru's republican series was first struck in aluminum-bronze to address the silver shortages that plagued the country after World War I.

This alloy, a mix of copper, aluminum, and traces of other metals, made the coin lighter and more resistant to wear than its predecessors. Production ran from 1918 to 1950 at the Lima mint, with designs typically featuring the Peruvian coat of arms on one side and a wreath on the other. Variations occurred over the years; for instance, some issues included a small letter indicating the assayer.

Mintage figures vary by year, and records for certain periods are incomplete due to archival losses in the mid-20th century. That said, these coins circulated widely in daily transactions.

One oddity: enthusiasts sometimes mistake the bronze patina for age-related damage, mistaking a mint error for a collector's prize.
