Belgium 50 Centimes

One of the more intriguing aspects of the Belgian 50 Centimes coin, minted from 1911 to 1940, is that its silver versions helped fund the nation's war efforts during World War I by being melted down for bullion.

That didn't last long. By the mid-1920s, rising silver prices forced Belgium to switch to cupro-nickel alloys, making the coin lighter and less valuable in scrap.

Variations exist, with some years showing subtle edge reeding changes, but exact production figures for certain wartime issues remain murky—likely lost in bureaucratic reshuffles. As for the design, it's a straightforward lion rampant on the obverse, paired with the denomination on the reverse. No frills.

Proof strikes were rare and mostly unofficial, appealing to the odd collector who doesn't mind a plain piece.
