Belgium 1 Franc 1909-1940

This Belgian 1 Franc coin, minted from 1909 to 1940, was part of the Latin Monetary Union, allowing it to circulate freely in France, Italy, and Switzerland as if it were their own currency. That practical arrangement saved travelers the hassle of changing money, at least until the union dissolved in the 1920s.

Design-wise, it featured King Albert I's profile on the obverse and the Belgian arms on the reverse, struck mainly at the Brussels mint. Early issues used 0.835 silver, but by 1921, wartime shortages forced a switch to cupro-nickel, a change that reflected Europe's metal shortages more than any grand strategy. Mintage figures vary by year, though records for the 1930s are spotty due to archival losses.

One oddity: the 1930 version shows a slight die variation in the king's beard, which might amuse those who look that closely. I've seen collectors debate it endlessly, as if it held some secret. It doesn't.
