The most striking thing about the French Indochina 1 Cent coin is its reverse design, which often featured a rice sheaf, a direct reference to the region's staple crop and the economic backbone of colonial Vietnam.

This bronze piece, minted between 1885 and 1945, was produced at the Paris Mint to standardize currency across the colony. It measured about 23 millimeters in diameter, with a simple obverse bearing the French Republic's inscription. Variations existed, including different edge types, but the core alloy remained consistent—90% copper and 10% tin, give or take.

Exact mintage numbers for many years are murky; records from that era weren't always kept meticulously, especially during wartime disruptions. Still, these coins turned up everywhere from Hanoi markets to remote villages, outlasting some of their higher-denomination counterparts.
