Early versions featured the profile of the Russian tsar, a nod to Finland's status as a grand duchy under imperial rule. After independence in 1917, the design shifted to the Finnish coat of arms, reflecting a hasty rebranding effort amid political upheaval. These coins were struck at the Helsinki Mint, using copper-nickel alloys that proved durable in everyday use.

While exact mintage figures for some years are murky—likely lost in archival mishaps—surviving examples show wear patterns suggesting heavy circulation during the interwar period.
