This 1879 Finnish 1 Markka was struck in silver at the Helsinki mint, featuring the portrait of Tsar Alexander II on its obverse—a ruler who, ironically, had approved Finland's own currency as part of its limited autonomy under Russian rule.

The reverse shows the Finnish coat of arms, complete with a crowned lion and nine roses, all rendered in a neoclassical style that nods to European numismatic trends of the time. At 2.5 grams and 18 millimeters across, it's a modest piece, yet it circulated widely in the Grand Duchy.
