Swiss 2 Francs

The Swiss 2 Francs coin, introduced in 1874, was the first to feature the federal coat of arms on its reverse, symbolizing Switzerland's unification after centuries of cantonal fragmentation. That design choice helped standardize currency across the new federation, reducing the chaos of local mints.

It was struck in .835 fine silver, weighing about 10 grams, and remained in circulation until 1967. The obverse typically showed a standing Helvetia, helmeted and holding a spear, while the edge bore an inscription for security. Mintage figures fluctuate; for instance, the 1880 issue might reach into the millions, but exact numbers for some years are murky due to poor record-keeping.

Variations exist, like proof strikes for special events, but they're rare. Don't bother with the myth that these coins funded Alpine expeditions—they didn't. As for collectors, they pile up like unanswered letters in my drawer.
