The most intriguing fact about the 1 Franc silver coin is that it was minted in enormous quantities—up to 100 million pieces in some years—to stabilize France's currency after the upheavals of 1870. This effort supported the Latin Monetary Union, letting these coins jingle in pockets from Paris to Athens.

Struck at the Paris Mint, primarily, the coin's design featured a simple profile of Marianne on the obverse, symbolizing the Republic, and the denomination encircled by a wreath on the reverse. They were composed of 0.835 fine silver, which made them durable but also tempting for melting during economic slumps. Mintage figures vary by year; records for the 1880s are spotty due to archival losses.
