The 50 Centimes coins of the Third Republic featured the first widespread use of the bare-headed Marianne design, a deliberate break from monarchical imagery to embody republican simplicity.

Struck in .835 silver, these pieces were minted mainly in Paris from 1870 onward, with some production at Bordeaux during the Franco-Prussian War. The obverse showed Marianne facing left, her hair unbound, while the reverse bore the denomination and a wreath. Mintage figures vary; records for the early 1870s are spotty, likely lost in bureaucratic reshuffles.

Weights hovered around 2.5 grams, making them practical for daily use in the Latin Monetary Union. By the 1890s, wear on circulation coins was evident, as silver tarnished quickly in pockets. Not every year saw production; gaps occurred due to economic slumps.
