The 5 Markkaa coin was first struck in silver in 1864, right as Finland was solidifying its currency under Russian administration. That initial run helped standardize trade in the Grand Duchy, a practical move amid economic flux.

Early designs featured the head of Tsar Alexander II, a nod to the era's politics. Later versions, from the 1910s onward, swapped to the Finnish coat of arms with its lion rampant, reflecting growing national identity. The coin's diameter stayed consistent at about 23 millimeters, even as materials shifted to cupro-nickel in the 1960s to cut costs.

Mintage figures vary by year; some records from the mid-20th century are spotty due to wartime disruptions. If you're handling one, note the edge reeds—originally for security, now just a tactile quirk.
