Belgium 1 Franc

The Belgian 1 Franc coin, minted from 1860 to 1914, was among the first to standardize at 0.835 silver fineness under the Latin Monetary Union. That meant it could be spent in France or Italy as easily as in Brussels, a practical nod to cross-border trade.

Design-wise, it featured the profile of the reigning monarch on the obverse—Leopold II for most of the run—and the denomination with a wreath on the reverse. The Brussels mint produced these on high-speed presses, churning out millions for everyday use. Variations exist, like edge lettering that changed over the years, but they're subtle.

We don't know exact mintage figures for every year; records from that era are spotty. Still, it's a sturdy piece, holding up well despite heavy circulation.

Some say it brought good luck if you found one in your pocket. As if silver ever cared about superstition.
