This 1835 20000 Réis gold coin was struck using bullion from Brazil's own Minas Gerais mines, a bold step toward post-independence self-reliance.

That decision came amid the regency period, after Pedro I's abdication left the empire in flux. The obverse shows his portrait, a design choice that lingered like an uninvited guest at a family dinner. The reverse bears the imperial arms, with an edge inscription in Portuguese that collectors squint at under a loupe.

We don't know the exact mintage; Rio de Janeiro's records from that time are spotty, possibly lost to humidity or neglect. What we do have are variants with different edge types, some smoother than others.
