The 5 Centimes coin was the first Belgian denomination to bear the portrait of Leopold I, marking the fledgling nation's coinage with a monarch's face just after independence.

This bronze piece, struck from 1832 to 1864, measured about 21 millimeters across and weighed roughly 2.5 grams. Early issues used copper alloy planchets, likely sourced from local foundries, though exact suppliers remain unclear. Designs evolved; the obverse started with Leopold's bust, while the reverse featured the Belgian lion and denomination. Mintage varied by year, but records from the Brussels mint are spotty after 1840.

Not every specimen survived intact. Counterfeits appeared early, given the coin's everyday use. As for rarity, common dates like 1849 turn up often in hoards, but variants with die errors fetch attention from specialists.
