The 8 Skilling was struck at Norway's Kongsberg Mint using silver from local mines, a practical choice that kept production costs down during uncertain times.

That made it a staple for everyday trade, from buying fish in Bergen to settling debts in Oslo. Weighing around 1.4 grams in its later issues, it reflected the era's shift toward lighter currencies as silver grew scarce.

Mintage figures vary by year; some records burned in the 1838 fire at the mint, so exact numbers are hard to pin down. Still, examples from the 1860s turn up more often than you'd expect.

One design featured a crowned monogram that looked deceptively simple, almost as if the engravers skimped on flourishes to get on with their day.
