Early issues were struck in silver, often on planchets sourced from repurposed coins, reflecting France's need to recycle materials amid financial turmoil. Later versions shifted to copper alloys by the mid-19th century, as silver prices fluctuated and wars depleted reserves. Mintage varied widely by year and mint, with some records lost in bureaucratic reshuffles.
