William III Irish Crown

The 1696 Irish crown was struck on planchets recycled from melted Spanish reales, a pragmatic reuse of captured or traded silver amid Ireland's economic strain.

That approach wasn't unusual for the era, as the Dublin mint scrambled to produce currency during the aftermath of the Williamite War. The obverse shows a draped bust of William III, facing right, while the reverse features a crowned harp with the date below. Inscriptions include Latin legends affirming his rule, though the lettering can be uneven due to worn dies.

Exact mintage figures are murky; records from that period burned in an 18th-century fire, leaving estimates unreliable. Still, survivors turn up in collections, often with signs of circulation wear.

Planchets varied in quality, sometimes leading to off-center strikes that puzzle modern graders. As for humor, calling it a "crown" when Ireland's troubles were far from regal might raise a wry smile.
