Gold Ducat

The Gold Ducat's design, featuring the Knight of Holland, remained virtually unchanged from 1586 to 1933, making it a rare example of numismatic consistency in an era of constant upheaval.

This coin was struck in gold of exceptional purity, often 983/1000 fine, on planchets that were sometimes sourced from recycled foreign coins. Dutch mints produced it primarily in Utrecht and later in other cities, though exact mintage figures for many years are murky due to lost records. We know it circulated widely in global trade, from the Spice Islands to the Americas, valued for its reliability over rhetoric.

One oddity: despite its longevity, the ducat never featured a date until the 19th century, which might have puzzled more than a few traders squinting in dim light.

It ended production in 1933, likely influenced by the global economic shifts of the time, but its legacy persists in collections worldwide.
