That design choice meant each minting reflected the political winds of the era. Struck in copper, often of variable quality due to wartime shortages, these coins circulated for nearly two centuries. We know production occurred in Parma itself, but exact mintages remain murky—records from the period are scarce, possibly destroyed in later conflicts.

Variations in weight and diameter were common, as planchets varied based on available metal. Sometimes, they weighed as little as 1.5 grams. Die wear led to blurry portraits, which savvy merchants used to haggle over value.
